Frequently Asked Questions

You are welcome to self-refer and book directly. A GP Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and referral will allow you to access Medicare rebates for eligible sessions.
-
To get a GP Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and referral letter, book an appointment with your regular GP. For a new MHCP, it is likely that you will be required to book a double-appointment (long appointment), so please check this when making the booking.
During the session, your GP will likely ask you some questions about your current experiences. They may also ask you to complete a short questionnaire to further understand your symptoms.
If the GP assesses you as eligible for psychological support, they will complete your MHCP and write a referral letter. Have the name and address of your preferred psychologist with you so that the GP knows who to address this to.

Your first session is an opportunity to settle into the therapeutic space. I will ask about what brought you to therapy, and gently explore areas of your life in an attempt to understand what may be contributing to your current difficulties. We will also begin discuss what you hope to achieve from our time together and some ideas on how we might be able to work together.
Most people feel a bit nervous coming to their first session. I will do my best to help you feel at ease. You do not need to prepare anything in advance but are welcome to bring in specific documents, notes or questions if this will help.

Yes, confidentiality and privacy are central to therapy. Everything you share is kept private in line with ethical guidelines. There are limitations to confidentiality in situations where there is a legal or safety requirement to disclose. These will be covered in the consent form that you will complete prior to commencing therapy. I am also available to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have in regards to confidentiality.
